Coronavirus Hospitalizations Increase in Some California Counties

The Los Angeles Times today reported that some California counties — including Orange County, Ventura County and the San Joaquin Valley — are seeing an increase in hospitalizations due to COVID-19. The increase is likely due to people not wearing masks and not practicing social distancing. Officials worry that reopening may have to be slowed in certain areas of the state. Read more here.

Lara Says LGBTQ+ Protections Still in Place

California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara issued a notice to the state’s health insurers stressing that California’s anti-discrimination laws must continue to be complied with despite the recent Trump Administration’s rule eliminating certain long-standing protections against discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation. In a written statement, Lara said this:
“Despite the federal government’s harmful stance towards the LGBTQ+ community, in California, we respect the right to health care regardless of gender or sexual orientation and, today, I am reminding health insurers in the state that companies still remain subject to California’s anti-discrimination laws. I will continue to fight to ensure all Californians, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and English proficiency, have access to quality health care and will work to vociferously defend this right in court. Today’s Supreme Court ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia, further demonstrates that the Trump Administration’s final rule is on the wrong side of equality, fairness, history, and the law.”
The final federal rule, in part, eliminates existing federal protections against discrimination on the basis of sex. The commissioner says the federal action pursued by the Trump Administration will have a disparate negative impact on women, persons in the LGBTQ+ community, those living with disabilities, and individuals whose primary language is other than English.

Is Life Insurance Manana’s Problem?

Life Happens and LIMRA have come together once again to produce the annual Insurance Barometer Study. This year’s study reviews 10 years of consumer data on life insurance and related financial issues. Importantly, it provides a point of view from January 2020, before COVID-19 significantly impacted the U.S.

Before the pandemic, close to half (46%) of U.S. adult consumers did not own life insurance. While 36% of respondents said they intended to purchase life insurance in the next 12 months, many were without it during the height of COVID-19 in the U.S.

Lack of ownership, according to LIMRA, may be adding to mounting financial stress Americans are facing.

Almost half (44%) of those surveyed said that they would feel a financial impact within six months if the primary wage earner were to pass away. More than a quarter (28%) would feel it within one month.

Ownership of life insurance this year fell among households in the lower and middle-income categories (i.e., under $100,000), declining by 25% over the past 10 years. Read the report here.
