Does Obamacare Put Farm Workers Health Care at Risk?

FarmWorkersCall it another round for unintended consequences. The Affordable Care Act, designed to improve access to health care for millions of Americans, carries the threat of stripping tens of thousands of agriculture workers of their existing health plans. Currently, California’s Salinas Valley growers and shippers provide health insurance to their ag workers through two predominant carriers — UnitedAg Trust and Western Growers. In most cases, the employer picks up 100 percent of the premiums. The reason farmers are able to afford these policies is because they include annual caps on the amount of benefits payments but the Affordable Care Act will turn that dynamic on its ear by requiring that policies have no annual caps according to a recent report in The Californian.
