Medi-Cal Must Restore Dental, Other Care to Needy

dentistCalifornia eliminated adult dental care, optometry, podiatry and chiropractic services for all Medi-Cal patients during a 2009 budget shortfall, saying they were optional for states under the federal Medicaid program, known as Medi-Cal in California. The Obama administration later approved California’s decision, allowing it to take effect in July 2009. The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco said the state’s action violated the Medicaid law’s provisions for health clinics serving the needy – a network of clinics in rural areas, and federally funded health centers serving the homeless, migrant workers, residents of public housing and other medically underserved areas according to a recent report in the San Francisco Chronicle.
