Dental Health
The Mouth-Body Connection

by Karen Brown

You've heard of the mind-body connection, but what about the mouth-body connection? For many of your clients, a dental visit is only about teeth. But, they need to know that what goes in the body affects the mouth and what goes in the mouth affects the rest of the body.

The state of a person's mouth can reveal factors about the condition of their overall health. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, more than 90% of all systemic diseases produce oral signs and symptoms. Dentists can be instrumental in helping to diagnose many conditions and diseases that are caused by oral disorders. They can also make sure their patients receive specialized oral and dental care if there is a chronic condition that requires it.

Remind your clients that taking care of their mouth, teeth, and gums is essential in taking care of the rest of their body. Good oral and dental hygiene not only prevent bad breath, gum disease and tooth decay, but they also contribute to the wellness of the whole body. A healthy mouth will help fight against harmful diseases. An unhealthy mouth may increase your risk of serious health problems such as diabetes, stroke, heart attack, and preterm labor. The case for good oral health keeps getting stronger. Help your clients understand the significance of oral health and its mouth-body connection.
